Day 5: REFRIGERATOR

Ah, the fridge. Clean it one day, go shopping, and it is like it never even happened!

You will undoubtedly be cleaning out your fridge at least one more time before the holidays as more food comes in than goes out, but these tips should make it much simpler later.

Refrigerator Organization Step – By – Step:

  1. (You guessed it…) Create a Staging Area.
  2. Remove All Items and discard any bulk packaging.
  3. Discard expired and unknown product. (You know what I mean!)
  4. Group like items together in broad groups, which will become your Zones. Examples:
    1.  Produce
    2. Dairy
    3. Beverages
    4. Condiments/ Sauces
    5. Meal Prep
    6. Left- Overs
    7. Coffee Needs

(The above image is a beautiful example of Zones and Containers from the popular team The Home Edit! However, most of our refrigerators will never look or stay that way, so use this as simply a guide and not the ‘Norm!.’)

5.  Contain small like items and multiple.

     a. Clear acrylic drawer dividers are perfect for holding rolling fruit, packs of snacks that came in bulk.

   b. Lazy Susan arrives again- use for your round yogurts, juices, or condiments.

  1. Clean Shelves and put back items in their new ‘Zones.’
  2. Label, Label, Label

* Tip-

Organize your food First In, First Out. This means newer products get put behind older product when stocking to ensure the oldest product is used first and help eliminate waste.

Now, when you are staring in your refrigerator with the door open it it Not because you cannot find what you are looking for, but because you don’t know what to eat. Unfortunately, I cannot help you with that. I can barely help myself with that! Good luck and Happy Holidays!
